Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos Continue To Roll In 3-1 Victory Over NIU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team celebrated forward Dylan Sing's birthday this afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois University on Wednesday. Sing and Tom Cooklin would lead the Broncos to a 13th consecutive game without a loss, improving the program record's unbeaten streak in the process.

The Broncos were able to get on the board during the 33rd minute Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead, after Charlie Sharp and Carson Hodgson found Sing for the opening goal.

"I thought we played a great first half, moved the ball well, pressed well, and created five or six good chances at goal. We finally broke through with a couple goals in the last 10 minutes. Birthday boy Dylan adds two more to his account!" exclaimed head coach Chad Wiseman

Around six and a half minutes after his first goal, Sing would continue his offensive attack in the final third of the field, netting his 12th goal of the season to put the Broncos up two heading into the half.

During the second half of play, the Huskies responded with a goal of their own to cut the lead in half for the Brown and Gold. "In the second half I think NIU got on the ball more and found some rhythm. They started to pin us back a bit, for the most part we got through those tough moments," explained Wiseman.

Almost two minutes later, WMU was able to close out the game from a strike by graduate student forward Tom Cooklin, off assists from Sing and Roni Sylejmani. Cooklin has been on fire as of late, scoring two goals and adding four assists in his last three games.

"I am very happy with the team's response when we conceded. Tom had a heck of a strike for the 3rd goal, he has had a good run of games. This now sets up a big match on the weekend against Missouri State, we're looking forward to it." concluded Wiseman.

Historical Notes

The Broncos responded to their 2-2 tie at Evansville on Saturday, October 7 with three straight wins during the homestand. With the victory today over NIU, Western Michigan extended its program record unbeaten streak to 13 games without a loss.

Both Sharp and Sing will finish their careers inside the top three for the most goals scored in program history for the men's soccer team. Sing's two goals this evening propelled him to 29 career goals and a tie with Randy Wojtala (1976-79) for the third spot on the all-time scoring list. As for Sharp, he stands at 32 career goals and is two strikes away from tying Dan Edwards (1991-94) for the most goals in program history.
