Broncos Tie with Ferris State in Series Finale

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Western Michigan and Ferris State battled to a 3-3 tie on Friday night inside Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Broncos got goals from Ethan Phillips, Sam Colangelo and Dylan Wendt in the game.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos came out aggressive, getting looks from Cedric Fiedler and Joe Cassetti to start the game. Just over six minutes into the game, Wendt nearly put the Broncos in front 1-0 after an errant pass found his stick in front of the net. However, his shot went wide.

As the game moved toward the middle portion of the first 20 minutes, Ferris State would light the lamp. A centering pass found the stick of Tyler Schleppe, and he put the Bulldogs in front 1-0 with about eight minutes left in the first frame.

With the period winding down, WMU would get a pair of shots on net before both teams had a player sent off for roughing with under two minutes to play in the period. Zak Galambos would find a shot on net during the 4-on-4 stretch, but Ferris State would net its second goal with under a second left to play in the opening 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos came out with a vengeance in the second period, scoring in the opening 20 seconds. Galambos fired a shot from the point that Phillips was able to get a piece of in front for his fourth goal of the season.

Later in the period, WMU went on a 5-on-3 advantage, and made Ferris State pay. Luke Grainger slid a pass to Colangelo who ripped a shot inside the top left corner of the net to tie the game at 2-2 early in the second frame.

The Bronco offense wouldn't stop there, as they would earn another power play with about five minutes left to play in the period. Alex Bump took a pass from Grainger and found Wendt in front of the net. Wendt chipped it toward the net, and the puck found its way in to put the Brown and Gold in front 3-2.

During the final minutes of the period, Western Michigan would get three more shots. FSU goaltender Logan Stein would keep it a one-goal game going into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD
After a Cassetti shot early in the period, Ean Somoza would head to the penalty box, putting the Broncos on the penalty kill. However, it would be Western Michigan that would get the only shot of the man advantage, with Tim Washe getting a look on net.

After killing off the penalty, Grainger nearly added a fourth goal, trying to jam one home in front of the net. Jacob Bauer would then be sent off for interference, putting WMU back on the penalty kill.

This time Ferris State would make Western Michigan pay, scoring the game-tying goal with 11:29 to play in the game. After the goal Bump would try and get the lead back, firing two shots on net that were saved by Stein.

With just under nine minutes to play in the game, WMU would take another penalty, giving the Bulldogs a chance to take the lead. This time, WMU was able to hold FSU to just one shot and get back to full strength with under seven minutes to go in the game.

As the game ticked down, Grainger was sent to the box with 2:37 left in the game. The Bulldogs would get three shots, but Cameron Rowe and the WMU defense would fend off the attack and send the game to overtime.

OVERTIME
Schleppe had a good look on net in the opening minutes of the overtime session, but his breakaway attempt missed wide. Following that, both teams had a player sent off with penalties.

With under 30 seconds to play, WMU got its best look in the overtime period, with Matteo Costantini nearly putting home the game winner. With five seconds left a WMU turnover led to a breakaway for FSU, but Rowe was able to make a save to send the game to a shootout.
