KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Ball State earlier this afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. The tie pushes the Broncos' record to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
"We knew that our opponents today would be a really challenging matchup for us, and we didn't do enough in the first half to earn the win," head coach
Lewis Robinson said. "We were pleased with the response and effort to implement our team game plan in the second half."
FIRST HALF
It didn't take long for either team to get going offensively, as both squads scored on their first shots of the game. Ball State opened the scoring in the sixth minute, as the ball pinballed around in the box before finding the foot of Kaitlyn Fraser who found the back of the net to give BSU an early 1-0 lead.
However, the Broncos were able to respond, as
Jenna Blackburn placed a beautiful cross on the foot of
Abby Werthman who was able to tie the game at 1-1 just over 20 minutes into the contest. From that point, the two teams struggled to find an edge as the game progressed toward the later stages of the half. That was until Lexi Fraley scored the go-ahead goal for BSU in the 41st minute. Ball State carried a one-goal lead into the half.
SECOND HALF
Just like the first half, WMU scored on its first shot of the second half, as
Madison Cotta ripped a free kick into the net to knot the game at 2-2 with about 25 minutes left to play. Moments after that goal,
Reagan Wisser had a look on net that was saved by Ball State keeper Bethany Moser.
Later in the half, Cotta got another look on a free kick, but Moser was able to turn away the offensive effort this time. Then,
Jen Blitchok nearly put the Broncos in front, with her header nailing the right post in the 77th minute.
As time ticked down, Western Michigan would get one last shot from Wisser, but Moser and the Cardinals' defense were there to make the stop. The game ended in a 2-2 draw with WMU leading in shots (8-6), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (3-1).
