TOLEDO, Ohio – Western Michigan redshirt junior forward
Markeese Hastings collected a new career high 20 rebounds on Friday evening, as the Broncos fell, 102-74, at Toledo.
Hastings surpassed his old career high of 18, which he set in last season's meeting between the Broncos and Rockets at Savage Arena. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native is the seventh player in NCAA Division I to have 20 or more rebounds in a single game this season. He's also the first Bronco to have a 20+ rebound performance since Seth Dugan pulled down 20 rebounds on March 2, 2019 against Ball State.
Titus Wright led the four Broncos in double-figures with a career-high tying 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. The junior also tied his career high in made free throws (8), on a career-high 11 attempts, and collected eight rebounds.
Joining Wright in double-digits for Western Michigan (4-11, 0-2 MAC) were
Tray Maddox Jr. (16),
JaVaughn Hannah (14) and
Lamar Norman Jr. (13). Hannah's 14 points established a new career-best for the freshman.
After Toledo (10-5, 1-1 MAC) hit a three-pointer to get the evening's scoring started, Hastings netted the next six points to put WMU ahead 6-3 in the opening minutes. A 15-6 response put the Rockets in front, 18-12, at the 11:51 mark of the first half.
Back-to-back layups by Wright and Hannah got the Broncos back to within two points, but UT countered with nine in a row to spark a 20-3 surge, which put the hosts on top, 38-19, with just under four minutes to go in the period. Toledo took a 42-23 cushion into the halftime break.
Shortly after halftime, the Rockets used a 7-0 run to extend the margin to 52-25. Western Michigan could get no closer than 21 for the remainder of the contest.
The Broncos connected on 24-of-62 (38.7 percent) from the floor for the evening, while Toledo made 33-of-63 (52.4 percent) from the field.
WMU returns to University Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 10, for a 7 pm contest against Eastern Michigan. To purchase tickets to any Western Michigan men's basketball home game this season, visit
