KENT, Ohio. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team suffered a loss on the road this afternoon to the Golden Flashes of Kent State by a final score of
Junior guard
Hannah Spitzley led the Broncos in scoring with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field while adding four boards. Freshman guard,
Alli Carlson, and redshirt sophomore,
Lauren Audino, registered six points each. While the Broncos found open looks, they struggled to find a shooting stride, going 15-for-55 from the field.
Spitzley started scoring for the Broncos with a layup assisted by Williams. WMU remained at two points on the board until
Gabi Saxman converted a layup with 5:05 left to play in the first. Western Michigan trailed Kent State at the end of the first, 22-12. The Broncos shot 4-of-12 for 33.3 percent from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. WMU saw points from Saxman, Spitzley, Williams, Audino, and
Maggie Stutelberg in the first.
The second quarter belonged to the Golden Flashes, where they outscored the Broncos 12 -8 and held WMU to just 4-of-16 from the field. As a result, KSU took a 34-20 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Despite a competitive first half, the Golden Flashes held Western Michigan to just five points in the third, while going on various runs themselves, and managed to pull away from WMU, 51-25, heading into the final quarter. The Broncos were unable to close the scoring gap in the fourth. Western Michigan scored a total of 13 points in the fourth while also holding Kent State to just 13 points. Redshirt freshman,
Artemis Kouki, entered the play after spending several weeks out due to an injury. Seeing the floor in the fourth also, was sophomore guard
Kallie Harrison and senior guard
Emily Flannery.
For the game, Western Michigan shot 15-of-55 (27.3 percent) from the field and 1-of-17 (5.9 percent) from three-point territory. WMU gave up the ball 15 times throughout the course of play. The Broncos managed to swipe the ball from KSU 11 times, Saxman with six steals, Spitzley with three, and Williams and Carlson each with one.
While KSU committed 15 turnovers in the contest, the Golden Flashes knocked down 24-of-62 scoring attempts and connected on 33.3 percent of their shots from deep, going 8-of-24 as a team. Kent State also shot 8-of-11 from the free-throw line for 72.7 percent. Kent State outrebounded the Broncos 48-24 and tied WMU with 28 points in the paint.
