KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Thanks to a pair of power-play goals and great goaltending, Omaha was able to snap Western Michigan's seven-game winning streak Saturday night inside Lawson Arena. The Mavericks collected a 2-0 victory and moved to third in the NCHC standings. WMU drops to fourth in the league.
The two teams were scoreless after one period, but Jonny Tychonick changed that with a power-play goal just minutes into the second period. The Mavericks extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Cameron Berg at the 7:31 mark of the second period. That is all Mavericks goaltender Simon Latkoczy would need, as he saved all 40 shots that came his way, including a 17-save third period.
WMU went to the power play less than a minute into the game and peppered shots at Latkoczy.
Zak Galambos had three shots saved, while
Cole Gallant had one sent away. McAllister was also turned away moments after the man advantage ended. On the other end of the ice,
Cameron Rowe was tested, as he made four straight saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 early in the first 20 minutes.
Jamie Rome and
Tim Washe had three shots in nine seconds that the Mavericks were able to keep out of the net. Midway through the first period, Omaha ramped up the pressure and racked up five straight shots on goal before the Broncos were able to get another offensive look. However, neither offense could muster up a goal, and the two teams entered the intermission tied at 0-0.
Early in the second period, Omaha made the Broncos pay for a
Cam Knuble penalty, netting the first goal of the night. After a faceoff win, the puck found the stick of Tychonick who lit the lamp for the goal. Trailing 1-0, WMU went on the attack, with Gallant having two shots sent away by Latkoczy. After that,
Cedric Fiedler went off for cross-checking, and the Mavericks again made the Broncos pay, scoring just over 30 seconds into the man advantage. Berg converted his chance, getting assists from Tychonick and Tyler Weiss.
From there, things got chippy, as four players (two from each team) were sent off for roughing after a scuffle broke out. Moments after that, Omaha's Jimmy Glynn was sent off for 10 minutes for misconduct. With a little energy from the crowd, the Broncos offense found some quality scoring chances, with
Max Sasson and Knuble getting looks. Midway through the second period,
Ryan McAllister, Galambos and
Chad Hillebrand fired four shots at Latkoczy, but he was again able to stand tall in net. WMU would record just one shot on net in the final seven minutes of the period.
Trailing 2-0, WMU tried to manufacture offense with its top line, with
Jason Polin being turned away twice in the early going of the final period. Hillebrand and
Aidan Fulp also had shots saved. Just over eight minutes into the period, Jake Pivonka was sent off for high sticking, and the Broncos' power-play unit looked for a spark. But it was Latkoczy's night, and he saved all four WMU shots during the Bronco man advantage. But Western didn't stop applying pressure as the period began to wind down. The Broncos kept the puck in the attacking end for nearly two minutes, generating six shots before a WMU penalty ended the attack.
The Broncos would kill off the penalty and pulled Rowe from net to try and find a pair of goals to tie the game. Shots from Sasson and Hillebrand were saved in the final seconds, and Omaha was able to earn a 2-0 victory.
Western outshot the Mavericks 40-30, with Rowe making 28 saves, including 11 in the second period and 10 in the first period. Galambos, Polin and Gallant led the team in shots, with each firing six on net.
WMU will be back in action next weekend at Minnesota Duluth. Friday's game is set to begin at 8 p.m. eastern time.
