KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened its spring season with a dominant 7-0 win over Ferris State at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday.
The Broncos (1-0) got things rolling by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Lindsey Zieglar and Valeriya Monko defeated Sophie Daavettila and Morgan Waller, 6-2, at No. 1 after Kaitlyn Rogosch and Maya Perkucin had made quick work of Kennedy Dumas and Amelia Laverdiere in a 6-0 win at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match between WMU's Karin Hamilton and Audrey Smitek and FSU's Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrar and Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrar went unfinished at 4-4.
Smitek was the first to pick up a win in singles, giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dumas at No. 5. Freshman Ariane Souligny picked up her first career win with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Moorea McNalley to push WMU ahead, 3-0. Zieglar sealed the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daavettila at No. 1, with Maya Percukin, Hamilton and Monko also picking up victories.
Western Michigan heads on the road to take on Nebraska on Friday at 4 p.m. and then takes on Utah State on Saturday in Lincoln at 11 a.m. The Broncos return home on Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. against Oakland.
