Broncos Fall in Tight Match at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team fell for the first time this season, dropping a hard-fought match at Notre Dame, 4-3, on Friday.  

The Broncos opened strong to earn the doubles point with wins by Anton Arzhankin and Arjun Honnappa and the team of Brogan Pierce and Benjamin George. Arzahnkin and Honnappa won at No. 2 over Matthew Che and Yu Zhang, 6-4, before Notre Dame tied it up with a win at No. 1. The doubles point came down to three with Pierce and George winning 7-6 over Matthew Haplin and Evan Lee.  

UND tied it up at 1-1 after Fu defeated Pierce at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4, and then took a 2-1 lead after Che defeated Peter Kuszynski at No. 2, 7-6, 6-3. WMU evened it up with George maintaining his perfect record after a 6-4, 6-3 win over Aditya Vashistha. The Broncos regained the lead with Jackson Boone defeating Noah Becker 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6 but the Fighting Irish finished up with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 to take the match.  

Western Michigan heads back on the road to take on Purdue on Friday at 4 p.m.
