Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis Rolls Past Butler and UIC

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its dual match season with 7-0 sweeps in a double header of Butler and Illinois-Chicago on Saturday at West Hills Athletic Club.

MATCH ONE - BUTLER
The Broncos (2-0) opened the morning with the victory over the Bulldogs. WMU earned the doubles point, winning all three matches. Peter Kuszynski and Ferdinand Schlueter took down No. 52 Thomas Brennan and Alvaro Huete Vadilllo 6-4 at No. 1. Fynn Lohse and Arjun Honnappa won at No. 2, 7-5, while Anton Arzhankin and Jackson Boone won at No. 3, 6-3.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, the Broncos cruised to victory. All six Broncos won in two sets, with Benjamin George winning in his first ever match at No. 1. Arzhankin won at No. 2, Kuszynski at No. 3, Honnappa at No. 4, Brogan Pierce at No. 5 and Boone at No. 6.

MATCH TWO – UIC
In the afternoon the Broncos once again earned the doubles point, winning all three matches. Honnappa and Lohse moved up to No. 1 and earned a 6-1 win, followed by George and Pierce at No. 3, 6-3, and Kuszynski and Schlueter at No. 2, 6-4.

In singles it was more of the same, with all six winning in two sets. Arzhankin moved up to No. 1 and earned a 6-2, 6-1 win. George was slotted at No. 2 and picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win. Kuszynski won at No. 3, 6-4, 6-1 and moved into 15th all-time on the WMU Wins List with 179, surpassing current WMU women's tennis head coach Ryan Tomlinson. Lohse picked up his first dual-match singles win at No. 4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Honnappa moved to No. 5 and picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win, with Pierce rounding things out with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6.

ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan now heads on the road for three straight weeks. First up is a trip down the road to take on Notre Dame on Friday at 4 p.m.
