Men’s Soccer Shuts Out BGSU, 1-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up its seventh straight win and second win in Mid-American Conference play, blanking Bowling Green State University, 1-0, at Cochrane Stadium on Tuesday night.

Senior midfielder Eric Conerty recorded the game's lone goal while WMU (6-1, 2-0 MAC) goalkeeper Hunter Morse needed to make just two saves in the win, holding BGSU to 0-0 in the first half and well into the second.

"I thought the game tonight was a great MAC soccer game. It had a little of everything." said head coach Chad Wiseman. "Got to give BGSU a lot of credit. They battled hard tonight, and made things very difficult on us. We wouldn't expect anything else from those guys."

"The first 20 minutes in the second half we were playing our game. Had BGSU locked into their end for long stretches, created multiple chances, and then found our goal."

The Broncos took lead in the 66th minute when a flighted ball from defender Daniel Nimick met the feet of Dylan Sing just outside the 18-yard box. Sing then found the feet of Tanner Hodgson who completed the assisting pass resulting in Conerty's goal. Conerty's goal taken at the top of the 18-yard box landed itself left, top shelf of BGSU's net, pushing the Broncos to 1-0.

A foul on Western Michigan's Charlie Sharp resulted in a yellow card and an indirect free kick was awarded to Bowling Green in the 73rd minute. The Falcons contested the Bronco's lead with a shot by Joey Akpunonu. The Broncos came out on top with a big save by Morse followed by a team effort to clear the ball.  Western Michigan held the lead to finish off the second half, despite enduring pressure from the Falcons.

"Three points on the road, another shutout, that's big time. The maturity we continue to show, the leadership is there, and more than anything the guys just make plays!"

The Broncos return home to take on Chicago State University on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on Bronco All-Access. Admission is free.
