EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season after dominating Michigan State in a 1-0 road victory at DeMartin Soccer Complex on Thursday night.
Dylan Sing scored the lone goal for the Broncos in the 13th minute, while WMU's smothering defense and ability to control the game kept the Spartans from landing any of their four total shots on frame. Michigan State transfer Hunter Morse did not need to make a save to earn his first win and shutout as a Bronco. WMU outshot MSU 7-3 overall and 3-0 on goal.
Western Michigan improved to 11-0 in its last 11 games against teams from the state of Michigan, which includes now two road victories against Michigan State.
"Today was a complete performance from the boys," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "It was a fun college match with a great atmosphere."
"Credit to our defense effort today. I think we gave up one quality chance in the run of play. MSU is always dangerous on set pieces and we were on point with our assignments and Hunter Morse was there when called upon."
The Broncos got on the board when sophomore left back Jonathan Robinson played the ball to Charlie Strong down the left flank. Strong dribbled along MSU's back line and slipped Sing in, who fired it into the top far post corner of the net to make it 1-0.
After the goal WMU continued to dominate the chances and possession.
"I think we were unlucky not to find a second goal in the first half," Wiseman added. "We hit the post and had a couple of other looks that just didn't fall our way."
Things did get a little hairy in the final minute as the Spartans had two consecutive corner kicks, but Morse and the Bronco back line were able to deal with them.
"I'm really proud of Hunter," added Wiseman. "He had a great performance. He controlled his emotions and showed a lot of class."
Western Michigan returns to action on Monday, hosting Wisconsin at 3 p.m. Prior to kickoff, Bronco fans can join in on the annual Bronco Soccer Fest. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. To register head to www.wmubroncos.com/soccerfest. Admission to the game is free.
