DETROIT, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team battled Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 tie on the road at Titan Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Indiana transfer Bria Telemaque scored the lone goal for the Broncos (0-2-1), with graduate student Hannah Sargent making three saves. Western Michigan outshot Detroit Mercy 19-10 overall and had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
"We felt like we played a very good first half in which we dominated the tempo of the game and should have been two or three goals ahead," said head coach Lewis Robinson. "We couldn't maintain the same physical and mental intensity in the second half, and we were punished for that with the tying goal. We are frustrated we didn't get the win we probably deserved, but it is another good lesson for us in the beginning of our season as we continue to prepare for conference play."
Telemaque gave the Broncos the early lead with a goal in the 20th minute. UDM's goalkeeper Jazmine Scott attempted to clear the ball from its defensive third, but it was intercepted near midfield. WMU quickly went on the attack and Kayla Whelchel lobbed a pass ahead for Telemaque. The junior attacker settled the ball and calmly slotted it into the bottom-right corner of the net for her first goal as a Bronco.
Senior forward Reagan Wisser scored with under a minute left in the first half on a diving header but she was ruled offside.
Abbey Lodato tied the game up late in the 80th minute on a header from inside the box off a cross from the right sideline.
Western Michigan heads back out on the road next Thursday to take on Arkansas at 8 p.m.
