KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In conjunction with the Mid-American Conference, Western Michigan and head men's basketball coach
Dwayne Stephens announced the team's 2022-23 schedule on Wednesday.
"We are excited to release our schedule for the upcoming season," coach Stephens said. "We feel that we have put together a very competitive non-conference schedule that will help prepare us for MAC play."
Coach Stephens is set to begin his first season on the Bronco sidelines after spending nearly two decades at his alma mater, Michigan State, working alongside legendary MSU head coach Tom Izzo. Stephens was an associate head coach for his last 10 seasons with the Spartans before he was hired as the 15th head coach in WMU men's basketball history in April.
Western Michigan begins the Coach Stephens era on Monday, Nov. 7, with a visit to Minnesota, the first of two Big Ten opponents on the slate for the Broncos. WMU follows that up with a road trip to Valparaiso on Nov. 13.
The weekend before Thanksgiving, Nov. 18-20, the Broncos are headed down to Houston for three games in three days against Houston Baptist, Rice and Georgia Southern.
The Broncos return to Kalamazoo on Nov. 26 as reigning Horizon League regular season champion Cleveland State comes to University Arena. Four days later, WMU is back on the road for a trip to Dayton.
Western Michigan takes its home floor for the final time in the calendar year 2022 on Dec. 10, as UIC comes to town.
WMU closes out its non-conference slate with a pair of road tilts against teams who reached last year's NCAA Tournament. The Broncos head to Iowa State on Dec. 18, and then wrap up non-conference play on Dec. 30 with a visit to Wisconsin.
After the calendar turns to 2023, Western Michigan begins Mid-American Conference play, with five of its first eight conference tilts coming on the road. The Broncos begin the league slate with road trips to Kent State (Jan. 3) and Toledo (Jan. 7).
WMU follows that up with its first two home MAC contests, beginning on Jan. 10 as Eastern Michigan invades University Arena. On Jan. 14, Bowling Green comes to Kalamazoo for the only regular season meeting between the two teams.
The Broncos head to Muncie, Ind., on Jan. 17 to take on Ball State, then return home a few days later, Jan. 21, to face Akron. Western Michigan topped Akron in overtime in last season's meeting at University Arena.
The following week sees WMU hit the road again for both of its games, starting with a visit to Ohio on Jan. 24. That Saturday, Jan. 28, Western Michigan heads north to Mount Pleasant for the first of its two meetings with rival Central Michigan.
The Broncos close out the month of January and begin the month of February at home, with Northern Illinois coming to Kalamazoo on Jan. 31, and Buffalo in town on Feb. 4 for the lone matchup of the year between the two programs.
Western Michigan's next road trip sees it head to Oxford on Feb. 7 for a date with Miami. Less than two weeks after their first matchup, WMU and NIU meet again on Feb. 11 in DeKalb, Ill.
Four of WMU's final six regular season contests are set to be at home, beginning with matchups with Kent State (Feb. 14) and Ball State (Feb. 18). The final road swing of the regular season sees the Broncos make visits to Eastern Michigan (Feb. 21) and Akron (Feb. 25).
The final homestand of the season for WMU begins on Feb. 28 against Miami. Western Michigan then closes out the regular season on March 3 with a rematch against rival CMU.
The 2023 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 9-11 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
The MAC men's basketball schedule is subject to change based on selections by the conference's television partners for its Friday night package.
The Broncos currently have the ability to schedule up to three more non-conference home games, which will be released at a later date.
