Baseball Lands 15 on Academic All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference has announced the 2022 Baseball Academic All-MAC Team, with Western Michigan totaling 15, tied for second-most in the league. A total of 122 baseball student-athletes were honored across the conference.
 
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who excel in both athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
 
Jimmy Allen • Junior • Finance • 3.29
Hit .315 with 43 runs scored (second-most on the team), 11 doubles, a team-leading three triples, five home runs and 31 RBIs. Ended the season on a 20-game hitting streak, tied for the third-longest streak in program history.
 
Hayden Berg • Sophomore • Sport Management • 3.63
Finished second on the Broncos with 17 appearances and 60 strikeouts in 56.0 innings of work. Also tied for the team lead with four wins.   
 
Greg Budig • Sophomore • Entrepreneurship • 4.00
Batted .279 with 16 runs scored, nine doubles, a pair of homers and 16 runs batted in. Defensively, he threw out four runners trying to steal.
 
Connor Charping • Senior • Chemistry & Biomedical Sciences • 3.92
Led Western Michigan in batting average (.348), runs (57), hits (72), steals (26) and runners caught stealing (18), with his stolen base and caught stealing numbers leading the conference. He was named All-MAC First Team for the second straight season, an ABCA/Rawlings Midwest All-Region Second Team honoree, and a semifinalist for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award.
 
Gavin Doyle • Junior • Finance • 3.76
Ranked 12th in the conference in batting average (.343), sixth in on-base percentage (.459), fourth in walks (37), eighth in doubles (18) and tied for 13th in RBIs (45). He also boasted a 23-game on-base streak, which was the second-longest on the team in 2022.   
 
Jack Huisman • Senior • Management • 3.60
Made 13 appearances, including nine starts, on the mound for the Broncos. Totaled 24 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work.
 
Brenden Lovell • Senior • Integrated Supply Management • 3.74
Pitched in a team-high 19 games, starting six, and finished third on the team in strikeouts (48) and fourth in innings pitched (55.2). Was named the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week on April 13 after tossing nine scoreless innings and earning a win and a save in a doubleheader sweep at Akron.
 
Justin McIntyre • Senior • Criminal Justice • 3.55
Batted .253 for the season with 42 runs scored, 13 doubles, five home runs, 22 RBIs and was second on the Broncos with nine stolen bases. Also set a single-season program record with 29 hit by pitches, which led the MAC and were second-most in the country.
 
Ryan Missal • Senior • Sales & Business Marketing • 3.43
Across 37 games, hit .217 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. Hit the first two long balls of his WMU career, including a grand slam, on back-to-back days at Kentucky.
 
Will Morrison • Redshirt Sophomore • Marketing • 3.69
Posted a .266 batting average with 38 runs scored, 14 doubles, five home runs and 24 RBIs. Also finished third on the team with eight steals.
 
Dylan Nevar • Redshirt Freshman • Electrical Engineering • 3.96
Batted .325 and led WMU with 20 doubles (third-most in the MAC), 11 home runs and a .614 slugging percentage. Was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and a 2022 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American.   
 
Joe Shapiro • Redshirt Freshman • Accountancy • 3.95
Made 15 appearances, including seven starts, and picked up a pair of wins on the mound for the Broncos. Racked up 36 strikeouts in 48.2 innings, including a career-high six on March 21 against Toledo.   
 
Easton Sikorski • Junior • Biomedical Sciences • 3.45
Pitched in seven games for WMU, starting five, and struck out 15 while covering 22.2 innings. In his final outing of the season, retired the first 20 he faced in an eventual two-hit, complete game win at Ohio.   
 
Cade Sullivan • Sophomore • Finance • 3.63
Posted a .315 batting average with 42 runs scored, 16 doubles, 10 home runs and a team-leading 52 RBIs, which were tied for sixth-most in the MAC. Earned spots on the All-MAC Second Team and the All-MAC Defensive Team.
 
Luke Thelen • Redshirt Freshman • Accountancy • 4.00
Tied for the second-most relief appearances on the team with 13, covering 15.0 innings of work. Piled up 18 strikeouts, including three twice, one of which came in a season-high three-inning outing against Kent State.
