WMU senior second baseman
Justin McIntyre was hit by a pitch in the first inning, the 52nd plunking of his career, to finish with the second-most hit by pitches in program history. This season, McIntyre set a single-season Western Michigan record by tallying 29 hit by pitches. The senior reached a total of three times on Saturday and scored twice in his final game as a Bronco.
Also suiting up for the final time for the Brown and Gold were
Connor Charping and
Ryan Missal, who had a pair of hits apiece. Charping added his 26th stolen base of the season, tied for fifth-most in a single-season in WMU history. The Trenton, Mich., native finishes his career as a Bronco with 68 steals, third-most in program history.
McIntyre and Missal each notched a double on Saturday, pushing WMU's season total to 131, a new single-season team record. The Broncos obliterated the old mark of the 2001 team, which racked up 114 two-baggers.
With a leadoff single in the top of the first,
Jimmy Allen stretched his hitting streak to 20 and on-base streak to 27, both of which were the longest by a Bronco in 2022. The 20-game hitting streak is tied for the third-longest streak in program history.
Following Allen's leadoff single, the Broncos loaded the bases with nobody out in the opening frame. Allen scampered home on a ground ball, and
Cade Sullivan then knocked in McIntyre to put WMU ahead 2-0 in the early going. Sullivan drove in a team-high 52 runs for the season.
Ohio answered with a single tally in the bottom of the frame to cut the Western Michigan advantage in half.
The Broncos loaded the bases again in the second, but were turned away. The Bobcats then evened the score at 2-2 with an unearned tally in the bottom of the third.
OU broke things open in the bottom of the fourth, pushing across six runs to open up an 8-2 lead.
McIntyre led off the next inning with a double, and after moving up on a ground ball, was brought home by
Gavin Doyle.
The WMU bats went quiet from there, as Ohio pitching limited the Broncos to two base runners over the remainder of the afternoon.
