Western Michigan Throttles Kent State 17-6 on Senior Day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan senior Ryan Missal rocketed a three-run double down the right field line to cap a 17-6 win for the Broncos over Kent State on Senior Day at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the game, Western Michigan honored its five seniors, Connor Charping, Jack Huisman, Brenden Lovell, Justin McIntyre and Missal.

FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 17, Kent State 6 (F/8)
LOCATION: Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (17-33, 14-21 MAC) | Kent State (21-27, 16-18 MAC)
W: Dane Armbrustmacher (4-5) | L: Rocco Bernadina (0-3) | Save: Hayden Berg (2)

Dylan Nevar tied his career high with four hits, while Jimmy Allen added three knocks. Josh Swinehart drove in a career-high four runs, while Allen and Missal collected three RBIs apiece. Nevar, Swinehart and Cade Sullivan each scored three times for the Broncos.

Allen homered for the third time during the four-game series to extend his hitting streak to 16 in a row and his on-base streak to 23 straight games, both the longest by a Bronco this season. Gavin Doyle's two-hit effort pushed his on-base streak to 20 in a row.

Dane Armbrustmacher picked up the win for Western Michigan, tossing five innings and surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out four. Starting with a double play to end the third, the southpaw retired the final seven Golden Flashes he faced. Hayden Berg worked the final three innings for WMU to pick up his second save of the year.

After a scoreless first, Kent State scratched across the game's first run in the top of the second. Western Michigan responded with four in the home half to take the lead. Swinehart evened the score with an RBI single, while Allen then put WMU in front with a ground ball which brought in a run. McIntyre plated two more with a base hit to put the Broncos ahead 4-1 after two.

The Golden Flashes pulled one back in the third before an eight-run eruption by the Broncos in the bottom of the inning. Swinehart cleared the bases with a three-run double, then scored later in the frame on a KSU error. Allen and Doyle then each hit two-run homers to push Western Michigan's lead out to 12-2.

After a two-run sixth from Kent State, Nevar went deep for the Broncos in the bottom of the sixth, his 10th long ball of the season. Nevar and Sullivan are tied for the team lead with 10 homers, and are the first WMU teammates to record double-digit home runs in the same season since the trio of John Toner (16), Greg Graham (14) and Sam Flamont (12) did so during the 2001 season.

The Broncos held a 13-6 lead heading into the last of the eighth, and the first three batters reached for Will Morrison, who brought a run home with a single, and kept the bases loaded for Missal. Missal ripped the first pitch he saw down the right field line to clear the bases and cap the Senior Day victory for WMU.

Western Michigan is scheduled to close out its home slate on Tuesday as it welcomes Valparaiso to Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. First pitch between the Broncos and Beacons is slated for 2:05 pm.
