LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Western Michigan softball team got an incredible performance from pitcher
Reily Galloway, and delivered clutch hitting to secure a 4-0 victory over Hofstra Friday night in the first game of four at the Cardinal Classic this weekend hosted by Louisville.
Galloway tossed a complete game and struck out 12, while allowing just three hits and a pair of walks over the 7.0 innings. Infielder
Alyssa Kramer went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Kramer came through with a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the first to score
Cassidy Brendtke, who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
The Broncos led 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when
Mary Smithnosky pinch hit and scorched a ball to center that the outfielder couldn't handle, driving in Kramer to make it 2-0. Then,
Darcy Barkauskas came through with a 2-out, 2-RBI double to make it 4-0 Broncos.
Hofstra, who had defeated Louisville earlier in the day, threatened in the top of the fifth when it loaded the bases with one out, but Galloway got a key strikeout and a pop fly to end the inning.
WMU has a quick turnaround, as it will play Hofstra again Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Later in the afternoon, the Broncos will take on Louisville at 3 p.m. The team then wraps up the weekend with a 9 a.m. contest against Illinois on Sunday.
