KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan women's tennis suffered defeat at the hands of the Miami RedHawks (9-8, 3-0 MAC) this afternoon by a final score of 5-2. The result moves the Broncos to 9-7 this spring, and 1-2 against Mid-American Conference opponents.
MU clinched the doubles point with victories at No. 1 (6-2) and No. 3 (6-1), canceling a result at No. 2 to put WMU behind by a point entering the singles competition. The tides remained in favor of Miami, increasing its advantage to 2-0 with a win at No. 2. However, junior
Kiana Rizzolo got the Broncos on the board shortly after with 6-2 and 6-1 wins at No. 6, making things 2-1, Miami, with four points left to be decided.
The RedHawks clinched the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 1, moving their advantage to 4-1 and solidifying the contest. After Miami added a fifth point, the Broncos responded with a two-set victory from senior
Femke Tjon-A-Joe, who won the first frame 7-5 and clinched her own singles win courtesy of a 7-6 (5-0) edge in the second set.
