KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan women's tennis picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory of the spring season this afternoon, fending off visiting Eastern Michigan (9-11, 0-2 MAC) by a final score of 4-3. The win moves the Broncos to 9-6 this spring, and 1-1 in MAC play.
WMU secured the doubles point in the match thanks to a 6-3 win on court one from senior
Femke Tjon-A-Joe and sophomore
Ana Guadiana, who are currently reigning MAC Women's Doubles Team of the Week, as well as a 6-2 victory on court three by sophomore
Karin Hamilton and senior
Kristina Tiraspolsky to secure the 1-0 advantage early, negating an outcome on court two.
The doubles point would prove to be of paramount importance as the two teams split the singles results. Tjan-A-Joe continued her impressive day, adding another point to her team's cause with 6-1 and 6-2 triumphs in consecutive sets. Junior
Lindsey Zieglar battled all afternoon as well, winning the first set 6-0 before surrendering set two. In the final set, Zieglar was able to grind out a 7-5 win and keep the Broncos even with EMU.
The day came down to the No. 3 singles competition, featuring
Karin Hamilton. After suffering a 6-2 setback in the opening frame, Hamilton battled back for 6-2 and 6-3 victories in the final two sets to secure Western Michigan the one-point win.
