Broncos Fall in NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship, Await NCAA Tournament Destination

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell to Minnesota-Duluth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff Championship game, 3-0, on Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center. 

UMD goalie Ryan Fanti made 25 saves to shutout the Broncos and was named the NCHC Frozen Faceoff MVP. Sophomore forward Ty Glover and junior defenseman Ronnie Attard represented the Broncos on the NCHC All-Tournament team. 

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 on an early goal by Dominic James at 5:26 in the first period. James go the puck in the UMD zone and skated all the way down, firing a shot that deflected off of a Bronco defenseman's stick and into the net. 

Minnesota-Duluth pushed the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 5:59 in the second period. Casey Gilling fired a shot from the top of the right circle and it deflected off of a Bronco and past Bussi. 

Wyatt Kaiser made it 3-0 with 10:48 left in the third period. He intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on Bussi and past a WMU defender, beating Bussi with a back-hander. 

The Broncos have secured a No. 1 in the NCAA Tournament and will find out their destination on Sunday evening. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
