KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play with an emphatic 6-1 home win over Ball State at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
The Broncos (5-6, 1-0 MAC) jumped ahead after claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Peter Kuszynski and Joqauin Caballer defeated BSU's Thibault de Negri and Eli Herran 6-4 at No. 2 to give WMU the advantage. Sophomores Benjamin George and Brogan Pierce defeated Vince Orlando and Parris Simmons 6-3 at No. 3. The No. 1 pairing of 68th ranked Arjun Honnappa and Fynn Loshe were up on the Cardinal's team of Danilo Kovacevic and Chris Adams 5-4 before the match was abandoned.
Honnappa quickly pushed Western Michigan's lead to 2-0 after dispatching Nathaniel Webster 6-1, 6-2. The lead was extended to 3-0 on a win at No. 5 by Pierce, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0. Kuszynski cemented the match win for the Broncos after beating Kovacevic 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Freshman Anton Arzhankin earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over de Negri to push the score to 5-0. Ball State finally got on the board with Orlando defeating Jackson Boone 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6. The match was wrapped up with Benjamin George leading 1-0 in the match and 3-2 in the second set before Adams had to retire.
The Broncos are back home, inside, on Sunday to host the Toledo Rockets at 2 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club. Admission is free.
