Broncos Down Rockets in Tough Battle, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play after a tight 5-2 win over Toledo on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club.
 
The win improved WMU's MAC regular season match win streak to 30, with the last loss coming March 31, 2017.
 
For the second time on the weekend the Broncos earned the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Benjamin George and Brogan Pierce took down Luka Jankovic and Adam Kovac at No. 3, 6-4. Peter Kuszynski and Joaquin Caballer secured the point, giving WMU the 1-0 lead, after defeating Cole Shoults and Krzysztof Wetoszka 7-5.
 
Singles play did not start off that hot for Western Michigan, with Broncos dropping the first set in four of the six matches. The Rockets tied the match at 1-1 with Pawit Somlaksup beating Kuszynski 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. WMU went back on top, 2-1, with Anton Arzhankin winning at No. 2 over Kovac 6-3, 6-3. The rest of the four matches were decided in three sets.
 
After dropping the first set, 4-6, George responded with a pair of 6-2 wins over Jankovic and No. 5 to extending WMU's lead to 3-1. Pierce sealed the match victory with a win at No. 6, coming from behind to win 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Fynn Lohse picked up the Broncos' fifth and final point with a win at No. 3 over Wetoszka 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3.
 
The Broncos head to New York next weekend to take on Buffalo on Friday at 1 p.m., Binghamton on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Cornell on Sunday at 11 a.m.
