CLEVELAND – The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards with freshman Anton Arzhankin earning MAC Men's Tennis Singles Athlete of the Week and the duo of sophomore Joaquin Caballer and senior Peter Kuszynski earning MAC Doubles Team of the Week.
Arzhankin helped the Broncos snap their three-match losing streak with a 6-1 win over the formerly undefeated Michigan State Spartans. The Moscow, Russia, native was slotted at No. 2 for singles and defeated MSU's Carson Gates 6-3, 6-3. The win improved Arzhankin to 13-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in dual matches.
Caballer and Kuszynski helped WMU get off to a strong start by claiming the doubles point in the win. The duo defeated MSU's Reed Crocker and Jack Winkler 7-5 at No. 2. Caballer and Kuszynski are now 4-0 on the season, all in doubles matches and all at No. 2.
This is the third straight week that a Bronco has earned a MAC weekly award and the second straight week WMU has claimed the MAC Doubles Team of the Week honors.
Western Michigan is off this week and travels to Notre Dame next Friday for a first serve of 4 p.m.
