DES MOINES, Iowa – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up its first win away from home this season, downing No. 55 Wichita State, 4-3, at Drake University on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos dropped the doubles point and were facing a 2-0 deficit after Luka Mrsic defeated Arjun Honnappa, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. The gap was pushed to 3-0 as Nicolas Acevedo took down Fynn Lohse, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. Western Michigan won the final four singles matches to earn the team's fourth win of the season.
The comeback started with Peter Kuszynski downing Kristof Minarik 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) at No. 1 to cut the lead to 3-1. Sophomore Jackson Boone picked up a win at No. 6 6-3, 7-6 (10-5) to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Sophomore Benjamin George tied it up at 3-3 after picking up a win at No. 4 over Orel Ovil, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Brogan Pierce secured the victory with a win at No. 5 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 over Ray Lo.
Western Michigan stays on the road, heading to Madison, Wis., to take on the University of Wisconsin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
