GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The sixth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team fell on the road at No. 7 North Dakota, 2-1, on Friday night.
UND goalie Zach Driscoll stopped 34 of WMU's 35 shots on the night to hold the Broncos (20-9-1, 12-8-1 NCHC) to just the lone goal.
The Fighting Hawks took a 1-0 lead on a goal at 13:41 in the first period. Jake Schmaltz found Ashton Calder in front of the net and he redirected the puck past Brandon Bussi for the game's first goal.
Freshman defenseman Jacob Bauer tied the game up at 1-1 at 7:28 in the second period. Junior forward Jason Polin found Bauer all alone in the slot and the Bronco blue-liner fired it just under the bar for his first collegiate goal. Polin tallied his ninth assist of the season on the goal.
Matteo Constantini netted the game-winner at 13:53 of the second period, taking advantage of a Western Michigan turnover to score off a pass from Judd Caufield.
The Broncos outshot the Fighting Hawks 35-19 but were held scoreless on four power plays.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. ET. The game can be watched live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network. Fans can also head to Lawson Ice Arena for a Watch Part/Open Skate. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free. Skate rental is available for $5 for those who need it.
