KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 17th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team snapped its two-game skid with a 2-2 tie at Lawson Ice Arena against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Friday night.
UND earned the extra point in the standings after winning the shootout, 3-2 in five rounds.
Junior netminder Cameron Rowe made a season-high 34 saves for the Broncos (10-8-1, 4-4-1), with Jamie Rome and Jack Perbix both tallying goals on the night. WMU finished 0-for-6 on the power play, with UND going 1-for-4.
Western Michigan struck first on a goal with 1.2 seconds to play in the first period. With just over four seconds remaining in the period, Tim Washe won a draw in the UND zone back to Aidan Fulp. Fulp found Rome in the slot for the one-timer that hit off the right post and into the net to put the Broncos ahead 1-0. The goal was Rome's career-high ninth of the season, with both Fulp and Washe picking up their seventh assists.
The Fighting Hawks tied it up on a power play goal by Judd Caufield at 5:18 in the second period. Caufield scored from the slot on a redirect for his sixth goal of the season.
Louis Jamernik gave UND the lead at 14:15 in the second period, scoring off a Bronco turnover in their own zone.
Jack Perbix then tied it up at 2-2 with his third goal of the season, coming at 11:47 in the third period. Sophomore forward Dylan Wendt made a play on the puck to keep it in the UND zone and found Perbix in the right circle for the quick shot and score. Wendt picked up his third assist of the season on the game-tying goal.
