Women's Basketball Drops Road Match Against Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped its road match on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Moby Arena, falling by a score of 85-65 versus Colorado State University.
 
The Rams outscored the Broncos 14-4 in second-chance points, out-rebounding WMU 43-28. Western Michigan shot 37.3% from the field (22-of-59) while tallying eight makes from beyond the arc. The Broncos went 13-19 in free throw attempts and added 24 points from the bench.
 
Alli Carlson had a career performance, stepping up as the lone newcomer this season. Playing in a career-high 24 minutes, Carlson scored a career-high 13 points off 5-of-11 shooting from the field, headlined by a 3-of-7 mark from the three-point arc. Lauren Ross led the Broncos with 21 points going 7-for-18 in field goal attempts and 6-for-7 in free throw attempts while tallying four rebounds. Hannah Spitzley added 11 points on the day with 3-of-4 made field goals, 1-of-1 made three-point attempts, and 4-of-5 made free throw attempts.
 
Colorado State shot 51.7% from the field (31-of-60) while tallying 11 makes from deep. CSU went 12-for-15 in free throw attempts and added 19 points from the bench. Leading the Rams, McKenna Hofschild tallied 31 points shooting 10-for-13 from the field, 4-for-4 from deep, and 7-for-8 in free throw attempts. Adding to the Colorado State lead, both Meghan Boyd and Cali Clark recorded 11 points, while Kendyll Kinzer added seven points.
 
Western Michigan started the first quarter strong, winning tip-off the Bronco's defense held the sharp-shooting Rams to a six-point differential. CSU opened up the shooting on the day with a five-point lead. Taylor Williams started the score sheet for WMU with a jumper inside the paint. Carlson then joined with two back-to-back made three-point attempts, closing the Colorado State lead. The first quarter concluded with WMU-18 and CSU-25 after two more three-point attempts were made by Spitzley and Abby Voss.
 
The second quarter proved to be a challenge as the Rams went on a five-point scoring run, followed by a nine-point run. Western Michigan added three made three-point attempts and a jumper, heading into the locker room at halftime trailing CSU 49-32.
 
The Broncos and Rams went back and forth in the third as they traded baskets. WMU shot 38.46% in field goals attempts (5-for-13) while CSU shot 43.75% (7-for-16). 
 
Despite Western Michigan beginning the final frame with a five-point run, the Rams finished the game outscoring the Broncos 21-12 while maintaining at least an 12-point lead to secure the win. 
 
Up Next, Western Michigan heads back on the road, traveling to Indiana to face Valparaiso University (2-4 overall) on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
