Western Michigan Falters at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Western Michigan women's basketball team rounded out its non-conference schedule with an 85-57 setback at the hands of No.5 Notre Dame on Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion.

Lauren Ross netted 14 points to lead the way for Western Michigan (5-6), her 11th straight game in double-figures. Hannah Spitzley joined Ross in double-digits with 12 points and a team-high five rebounds. Maddie Watters and Abby Voss both added eight points for the Broncos.

Notre Dame was out of the gates scoring seven points in the first three minutes of play. Eight of the next 13 went to the Broncos, trimming the margin to 20-12 heading into the second quarter.

Two made jumpers by Spitzley and Ross early in the second made 18 for the Broncos. The Irish had a 12-point margin with 6:25 to play when Voss sank a three-point attempt to start WMU's efforts to close the margin. Spitzley and Voss were the stars of the show in the first half, going 4-for-4 from behind the arch. Western Michigan held No. 5 Notre Dame to an eight-point game heading into the locker room.

Opening the third, the hosts pushed it out to a 25-point edge, 55-30, with a 17-point run. WMU added 10 points in the third, making the Irish lead 62-40. Notre Dame continued to extend their advantage into the fourth, adding 23 points, but not without the Broncos adding 17 of their points to make the final 85-75.

Western Michigan shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor for the day, while Notre Dame connected on 55 percent (33-of-60) of its field goal attempts. The Broncos recorded 20 boards, 8 assists, three blocks, and eight steals, with 12 Broncos seeing the court. WMU concluded play with 20 points in the paint, with 17 points from the bench.
