Broncos Return to Action with Road Contest Against Chicago State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team travels West to Chicago, Illi. to take on the Cougars of Chicago State University on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm EST at Jones Convocation Center. 
 
OPENING TIP:
  • WMU enters play 4-5 overall following a 77-76 home victory over the Sycamores of Indiana State.
  • Lauren Ross leads the Broncos in scoring at 20.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 13 steals.
  • Taylor Williams averages 13.1 PPG, eight RPG, 10 steals, and an impressive 13 blocks 
  • Hannah Spitzley adds 34 total rebounds, 16 steals, and seven blocks proving quick hands and anticipation to be her strong suit. 
  • On the season, the Broncos averaged 64.2 PPG on 37.7 percent shooting from the field. Western Michigan averages 31.3 rebounds per contest. WMU averages 11.9 rebounds per game and knocks down 31.3 percent of their attempts from the line. Western Michigan dishes out 12.2 assists a game while making on average 10.3 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.
  • Series History- Saturday's game will be the 18th meeting between WMU and CSU with the Broncos holding a 14-3 advantage in the all-time series.

LAST TIME OUT 
The Broncos downed the Sycamores of Indiana State with a 77-67 home victory on Saturday, Dec. 17 at University Arena. 
 
Western Michigan started down two points entering tip-off as a result of a technical foul called on WMU. With a five-point deficit in the opening minutes, the Broncos traded shot for shot to trail ISU at halftime. Into the second half, Western Michigan stepped up their game both offensively and defensively. 
 
Lauren Ross had a career-high 30 points going 7-for-17 from the field, 4-for-8 from deep, and 12-for-13 from the free throw line. While Taylor Williams and Hannah Spitzley led the defense, Williams tallied six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Spitzley added six rebounds, one block, and two steals. 
 
WMU concluded the contest shooting 21-for-53 from the field (39.6 percent), 11-for-25 from deep (44 percent), and 24-for-34 from the free throw line (70.6 percent). 
 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS 
Chicago State University preps to host the Broncos on Saturday, December 17, opening the 2 pm tip-off with Youth Day at the Jones Convocation Center after playing two games in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. CSU dropped both games on the road, first with a 105-54 loss to the University of Minnesota and then a 74-56 loss at the University of St. Thomas. 
 
Currently leading the Cougars in scoring is Tae'lor Willard averaging 11.3 PPG, 2.6 RPG, with a total of eight steals, and two blocks. Followed by Janiah Newell making on average 9.9 PPG and 2.2 RPG with a total of eight steals. Josie Hill tops CSU in rebounds averaging 6.8 RPG, just behind is Taylor Norris with 5.2 RPG.
 
On the season, Chicago State averages 55.1 PPG on 33.7 percent shooting from the field. CSU averages 34.4 rebounds per game for a -9.2 margin against their opponents. The Cougars on average attempt 10.2 free throws per game making 65.3 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe. CSU adds 10.3 assists a game with 5.9 steals and 2.5 blocks per contest. 
 
UP NEXT
WMU will head on the road to South Bend, Indiana to face the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The weekday matchup is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
