Perez Breaks 5k Record at GVSU Holiday Open

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Western Michigan's Mikayla Perez made history by shattering the WMU Track & Field indoor 5,000-meter run record as the Broncos opened the season at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday night.

Perez ran a time of 16:23.94 to break the previous record of 16:35.60 set by WMU Hall of Famer Kayla Skelly back in 1986. Perez, who was a First Team All-MAC selection during cross country season, was one of two Broncos to win events on the day. Freshman Anichka Malachi took first place in the triple jump, reaching 39 feet, 1.75 inches.

Freshman Tess Van Dyk had a strong showing her in first collegiate meet, taking second place in the shot put at a distance of 43 feet, 3.75 inches. Sophomore Lily Kucharek took sixth place in the weight throw to round out the meet's highlights for WMU, reaching a distance of 47 feet, 10.5 inches. The mark was a new personal-best.

The Broncos head back to GVSU on Jan. 14 for the Bob Eubanks Open.
