KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team took the floor for its first action of the 2022-23 season on Thursday, Nov. 3 at University Arena. The Broncos hosted Aquinas College and defeated the Saints 81-49.
Western Michigan scored the first six points of the game and never trailed throughout the evening. After Aquinas got within one at 6-5, the Broncos netted 11 of the next 13 and held a 17-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
An 11-2 start to the second period helped WMU boost its lead to 17, 28-11, which was the largest margin of the first half. The Broncos took a 32-20 advantage into the halftime locker room.
Aquinas trimmed the margin to nine on multiple occasions early in the third quarter, but WMU used an 11-3 run to build its cushion back to 17, 52-35. Western Michigan led 54-37 heading into the final period.
The Broncos continued their momentum into the final quarter, using a pair of 7-0 runs to extend the advantage to 31, 72-41. Western Michigan's biggest lead of the night came in the final minute at 81-48.
The Broncos begin the 2022-23 regular season on Monday, Nov. 7, with their home opener at University Arena against the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago at 7 p.m. Tickets for all WMU women's basketball home games are available at wmubroncos.com/tickets.
