SIXTEEN YEARS
The Western Michigan defense has had a special season. In MAC play the team has given up just 23.6 points per game, the second fewest since the 2019 (23.5) and the 2016 (18.4) seasons. In terms of yards per game, the Broncos are only giving up 349.3 in MAC contests. It's the first time that a WMU defense has averaged below 350 yards per game since the 2006 season. That year, the Bronco defense gave up only 281.5 yards per game.Â
ALMOST THERE
Junior running back
Sean Tyler heads into the final game of the season with 896 yards rushing after posting a career-high 177 in last week's win at Central Michigan. Tyler needs just 104 more to reach 1,000 for the second time in his career. If Tyler gets to 1,000, he will become the first Bronco to reach the mark in back-to-back seasons since Levante Bellamy did so during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.Â
Tyler can also become just the seventh running back in program history to reach 1,000 in a season twice in his career, joining Jarvion Franklin (3), Jerome Persell (3), Robert Sanford (3), LeVante Bellamy (2) and Brandon West (2).
GROUND AND POUND
Western Michigan posted a season-high 255 yards rushing in the win against Central Michigan last week. The team's previous high of 207 came in the second game of the season at Ball State. The blizzardy conditions did not slow down the Broncos as they averaged 5.42 yards per carry.
Sean Tyler carried the bulk of the load with 177 yards on 26 carries. True-freshman quarterback
Treyson Bourguet had a career-high 57 yards rushing on 11 carries, while
Zahir Abdus-Salaam had 27 on six carries.Â
CAREER HIGHS FOR CROOMS
Junior wide receiver
Corey Crooms has now set two new career highs this season. After posting 63 yards against the Chippewas he pushed his season total to 788, setting the new mark. Crooms also has a career-high 54 receptions, upping his production in that area from 44 last season. Crooms also needs just one touchdown reception to match his career-high of six that he set last season.Â
