KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 12th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team scored four straight goals to erase a 3-1 deficit and beat Minnesota-Duluth, 5-3, on Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
Luke Grainger scored twice, while Ryan McAllister had another three-point game with a goal and two assists for the Broncos (9-6-0, 4-2-0 NCHC).
Jamie Rome and Zak Galambos also lit the lamp, while senior captain
Jason Polin and
Cole Gallant each had two assists. WMU outshot UMD 36-20 on the night and finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
A goal by Ben Steeves gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead with 1:43 to play in the second period.
Western Michigan had been carrying the period, outshooting Minnesota-Duluth 14-8 at that point. McAllister then created a turnover in the UMD zone, passing it off to Grainger and then Grainger returning the puck. McAllister fired a shot from the slot that trickled behind Bulldog goalie Matthew Thiessen. Polin tried to poke it in but ended up pushing it over to McAllister, who punched it in for his seventh goal of the season. The goal cut UMD's lead to 3-2 with 2.1 seconds left.
WMU tied it up at 3-3 at 9:48 third period on a delayed-penalty goal by Grainger. Cameron Rowe made it to the bench during a delayed penalty and Grainger hopped on to the ice and skated into the UMD zone. McAllister found him at the top of the right circle and the junior forward skated towards the goal and back-handed it into the net for his fifth of the season and second of the weekend.
UMD killed off the ensuing power play but the Broncos found themselves back on the man advantage with under five minutes to play. Polin punched the puck out of a scrum along the wall up to Carter Berger at the left point. Berger skated towards the slot before passing it off to Rome for the one-timer into the back of the net. Berger picked up his ninth assist of the season and Polin tallied his 10th. The goal extended Rome's career-high to seven on the season and marked his third goal in four games.
The Broncos put the game to bed with an empty-net goal by Grainger with 46.5 seconds left. Rowe made a save and Gallant pushed the rebound to McAllister. McAllister then found Grainger in the neutral zone and he fired it in from just beyond the UMD blue line to make it 5-3.
Western Michigan heads on the road for Thanksgiving weekend, traveling to Nashville, Tenn., for a rematch of the NCAA Northeast Regional Semifinals against Northeastern at the Music City Holiday Classic. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. ET at Bridgestone Arena on Friday.
