Women's Tennis Opens Bronco Super Challenge with Eight Wins

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened the first day hosting the Bronco Super Challenge at West Hills Athletic club on Friday, picking up three wins in doubles play and five in singles.  

Freshman Audrey Smitek and junior Karin Hamilton picked up WMU's first win of the day after defeating the pair of Vevere and Franz from Cleveland State, 6-0. In the second round of doubles it was Lindsey Ziegler and Kaitlyn Rogosch beating Ruyssen and Komar from Wayne State, 6-3. Valeryia Monko and Kiana Rizzolo also picked up a win in the second round, besting Notre Dame's Castedo and Sforzo 6-0.  

Zieglar started off singles play with a win over Milwaukee's Burgerdijk 6-1, 6-2. Hamilton defeated Northern Illinois' Dimtriev 6-1, 6-2, while Maya Perkucin bested WSU's Ruyssen 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). Smitek also picked up a win in singles, deafting Ross from NIU 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) and Rizzolo wrapped up the day with WMU's final victory after her opponent withdrew in the second set.  

Another round of doubles and then singles play awaits the Broncos on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Admission at West Hills Athletic Club is free.
