KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Six different players scored in double-figures, as Western Michigan picked up its first win under first-year head coach
Dwayne Stephens, 99-62, over Goshen College on Thursday evening at University Arena.
The Broncos (1-1) shared the basketball all night, as the team handed out 24 assists to tie a single-game program record. The 24 assists helped WMU hit 41-of-71 (57.7 percent) from the field and 12-of-25 (48.0 percent) from downtown, with 12 different players collecting at least one bucket in the contest.
Gus Etchison was the leading distributor for Western Michigan, as he equaled his career high with five assists.
Both
Tafari Simms (6-for-10) and
Titus Wright (6-for-8) had 13 points to lead the six double-digit scorers for the Broncos, with
Markeese Hastings netting 12, and the trio of Etchison,
JaVaughn Hannah and
Lamar Norman Jr. tallying 10 points apiece. Hastings also collected a game-high 10 rebounds for his fifth career double-double.
The contest was tight in the early going, with Western Michigan using a 9-0 run to seize a 17-10 advantage at the 12:42 mark. With the lead at 29-22, the Broncos put together a 14-3 surge to enter the halftime locker room with a 43-25 cushion.
Western Michigan carried the momentum into the second stanza, as the hosts ripped off the first nine points to extend the margin to 27, 52-25. After an 8-0 Goshen response got the visitors within 19, 54-35, WMU notched eight of the next 10 points to increase the cushion back to 62-37.
In the latter stages of the second half, WMU had an 18-2 stretch which saw the Broncos hold the Maple Leafs to just one field goal over a span of nearly five minutes. Western Michigan's largest lead of the night came with 3:30 to go, as a pair of
Max Burton baskets anda Simms lay-in put the Broncos ahead 96-50.
WMU dominated on the glass to the tune of a 45-21 advantage, including a 12-2 edge in offensive rebounding, which led to the Broncos outscoring Goshen 19-3 in second-chance points. The Western Michigan bench also outpaced the Maple Leaf bench 47-22, and WMU was plus-22 (50-28) in the paint.
Western Michigan hits the road for its next four contests, starting on Sunday at Valparaiso. The Broncos and Beacons are set for a 5 pm tip on
