FIRST AND FIVE
TROPHY HUNT
Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan is the first in the hunt to reclaim the Michigan MAC Trophy. The Michigan MAC Trophy was created back in 2005 by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and is given to the overall winner between EMU, WMU and Central Michigan. If all three teams go 1-1, then the current holder retains the trophy.
Western Michigan has held the football trophy the most, winning it seven times, including six of the last eight seasons. The Chippewas currently hold the trophy after defeating both EMU and WMU last season. The Eagles have not held the trophy since 2012.Â
HE CAN DO IT ALL
Junior running back
Sean Tyler scored his third different touchdown of the season in the win over New Hampshire last Saturday. Tyler had already scored two rushing touchdowns and returned a kickoff for a score so far on the season. The one thing he was lacking was a receiving touchdown, which he delivered in spectacular fashion against the Wildcats. Tyler caught a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage and took it 76 yards to the house to give WMU a 21-0 lead.Â
That's Tyler's third career receiving touchdown after recording two last season. He also added a rushing touchdown late in the game to give him five total scores on the season. Tyler has 25 total touchdowns in 35 career games played.Â
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT
After leading the MAC in sacks last season the Broncos have put pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season, but have fallen short when it comes to finishing the job. Seven different Broncos recorded a sack in the win over New Hampshire.
Corvin Moment,
Braden Fiske,
Dorian Jackson,
Warren Dabney, Josh Nobles,
Kenny Givens and
Elijah Hawk all got to the quarterback and finished the job in the win.Â
WMU had just three sacks in its first four games before the outburst.Â
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE
Redshirt sophomore defensive end
Marshawn Kneeland returned from injury for his first sustained action of the season in the win over New Hampshire. Kneeland had six tackles, including two tackles for loss in the win. He had a breakout season last year with 31 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks but sustained an injury in camp that kept him out of action in the first four games of the season.Â
PICK SIX
In the fourth quarter, Western MIchigan safety
Delano Ware intercepted a tipped pass at the WMU 3-yard line and returned in 97 yards for a touchdown. It was the third-longest pick six in program history. The Broncos have not had a pick six since Drake Spears intercepted a screen pass by Brett Gabbert and took it 74 yards to the house back on Oct. 12, 2019.Â
