KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 17th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team blanked No. 13/12 Notre Dame, 4-0, at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Defensemen Cedric Fiedler and Zak Galambos both netted two goals, while junior Cameron Rowe was stellar in net. Rowe stopped all 22 of Notre Dame's shots to earn his first shutout as a Bronco. Tim Washe had two assists, while Galambos also had a helper for a three-point night. WMU (5-2-0) outshot the Fighting Irish 38-22 and held them scoreless on four power play attempts.
Fiedler netted his first collegiate goal to give Western Michigan a 1-0 lead at 10:06 in the first period. There was a scrum for a rebound in front of the net and Galambos got to it and dished it off to sophomore forward Wyatt Schingoethe. Schingoethe then sent it to Fiedler, who one-timed it into the net. The assist was Schingoethe's first collegiate point, while Galambos tallied his second of the season.
Fiedler didn't wait long to get his second career goal, scoring just 2:42 later to make it 2-0. Washe won a faceoff in the UND zone to Jamie Rome and Rome fed Fiedler for the one-timer and he fired it off the left post and into the net at 12:48.
After a scoreless second period the Broncos had to kill off 45 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. Rowe made three saves during the two-man advantage and WMU killed off the rest. Western Michigan then had a power play of its own and capitalized on it with Galambos scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Cole Gallant prevented a clearing attempt and found Washe down in the right circle. Washe drew the defense to him and found Galambos back-door for the tap-in, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Galambos added his second of the night with one-minute left on an empty-net goal with Luke Grainger picking up the assist.
Western Michigan is back in action next weekend against the University of Michigan. WMU heads to Ann Arbor on Friday for a 7 p.m. puck drop before hosting the Wolverines on Saturday at 6 p.m. Single-game tickets for Saturday's game go on sale on Monday.
