KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan Head Coach
Chad Wiseman became the second coach in program history to win 100 games on Tuesday night, as the Broncos knocked off Oakland University 3-0.
The win was the 10th for the Broncos this season and 13th consecutive victory over an in-state opponent.
"The program is on one heck of a run against in-state opponents," Coach Wiseman said. "They continue to add to the record, 13-0 over the last 4+ years. I think it will be very difficult for any school to ever break that."
WMU (10-2-1) outshot Oakland (3-8-3) 17-15 overall and had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Daniel Nimick,
Eric Conerty, and
Charlie Sharp all tallied goals, while Conerty and
Mike Melaragni added assists. Graduate transfer
Hunter Morse was called on to make seven total saves, earning his ninth shutout of the season.
Oakland forwards tested Western Michigan's goaltending right off the kickoff. The Golden Grizzlies fired nine shots in the first 23 minutes of play with five shots on goal, resulting in five made saves for Morse.
"I thought Oakland played very well today," Wiseman continued. "They moved the ball, played through our lines at times, and got into the final third at times with too much ease. They definitely threw a few more numbers forward than what they had been showing in previous games."
"Congrats to the guys on their 10th win of the season. Another shutout, we never take that for granted. Hunter in goal was sharp and rock solid when called upon, as he has been all year."
Western Michigan took the lead in the 17th minute when a corner kick from Conerty met the head of Nimick in the 18-yard box. Nimick's finish was his fourth goal on the season.
WMU took a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute on a goal by Conerty. Conerty played the ball up through the midfield to Melaragni who chipped the ball over the foot of an Oakland defender, slipping Conerty through the defensive line one versus one with the Golden Grizzlies center back. Conerty fired off a shot just inside the 18-yard box, landing itself in the far bottom corner.
Later in the second half, the Broncos nearly pushed the score to 3-0, but a strong header by Sharp was saved by OU goalkeeper, Michael Sly Jr.
"We were dangerous with our attacks today," Coach Wiseman added. "We scored three goals but created six to seven more chances that we easily could have finished."
WMU's third goal came in the 68th minute by Sharp, when a Golden Grizzlies foul resulted in a penalty kick. Sharp's penalty finished bottom-left of the Oakland net.
"Now we direct our attention to Senior Day," Coach Wiseman said. "It's going to be a great day at the WMU Soccer Complex on Saturday. We have so many great seniors to honor and celebrate."
Western Michigan now returns home to the WMU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 22 to take on Wright State University at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. Come on out and support! Admission to the game is free. For those unable to make the trip, Saturday's matchup will be streamed through Bronco All-Access.
