CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's tennis team split its double-header against Cleveland State and St. Bonaventure on Saturday with a 5-2 loss to the host Vikings and a 7-0 over the Bonnies.
The Broncos (3-2) opened the morning against CSU. The Vikings took the doubles points after wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Selma Tounsi and Bethany Yauch defeated WMU's Ana Guadiana and Karin Hamilton, 6-3, to put Cleveland State up 1-0. Western Michigan tied up the doubles action with a win at No. 3 by Lindsey Zieglar and Maya Perkucin, defeating Oihane Vicario and Filippa Fronger 7-6 (7-4). Sima Heren and Klara Mrcela beat Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Kristina TIraspolsky 7-5 to secure the point and give Cleveland State the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Hamilton and Tjon-A-Joe both picked up wins in singles play. Hamilton was slotted at No. 3 and defeated Mrcela 6-2, 7-5. Tjon-A-Joe played at No. 4 and won in three sets over Tounsi 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Perkucin took her opponent to three sets but the Vikings claimed wins at No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 to seal the win.
Western Michigan made quick work of St. Bonaventure in the afternoon match. In doubles Tjon-A-Joe and Tiraspolsky won at No. 1, 6-1, over Andrea Roque and Amelia Haley. Elizabeth Trupp and Taylor Smith earned a victory at No. 3, 6-1, over Floor Lissone and Alexandra Jansson to claim the doubles point.
All six Broncos won in two sets in singles action. Zieglar won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Hamilton won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Tjon-A-Joe won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, Perkucin defeated Lisson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, Smith picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Kiana Rizzolo won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Broncos return home for a busy weekend of tennis, hosting Oakland on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Valparaiso on Sunday at 1 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club. Both matches are free to the public, but masks are required.
