Broncos Complete Series Sweep of Eagles

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team completed a series sweep of Eastern Michigan with a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) over the Eagles on Friday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Logan Case picked up her fourth straight double-double, totaling 37 assists and 11 digs. The sophomore setter now has a team-leading eight double-doubles this season.

Defensively, Mairead Boyle registered double-digit digs for the sixth straight match, collecting a match-high 18. Sammi LaBolle led Western with five blocks.

Western Michigan got out to a fast start, tallying seven of the first eight points of the afternoon. Leading 14-7, the Broncos used a 4-0 spurt to up the margin to 18-7. WMU cruised from there, maintaining an advantage of at least nine points over Eastern (5-8, 0-2) for the remainder of the first set.

The Broncos broke a 5-5 deadlock with a 5-1 run to go in front, 10-6, early in the second set. Another four straight for WMU helped build the visitors' advantage to 15-8. Western got its lead as large as 19-11, before a 7-0 EMU surge trimmed the margin to 19-18. The Broncos responded with four of the next five points to stave off Eastern Michigan's rally and take a 2-0 lead into the break.

WMU jumped out to a 5-1 edge in the third frame, but the Eagles drew even at 7-7. The two teams went back and forth until a 9-1 Western surge turned a 15-14 EMU lead into a 23-16 advantage for the Broncos, essentially putting the contest out of reach. Western Michigan hit .341 over the course of the third set.

The Broncos return to University Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 28, to open up a three-match homestand against Northern Illinois. First serve is set for 6 pm. To purchase tickets, visit wmubroncos.com/tickets.
