KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan volleyball team wraps up its non-conference schedule this weekend with the Bulldog Brawl in Indianapolis. The Broncos are set to face Milwaukee on Friday afternoon at 3 pm, then take on the hosts, Butler, on Saturday evening at 6 pm.
LAST WEEK
Western Michigan took two out of three last weekend at the Sycamore Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The Broncos earned 3-0 victories over Austin Peay and IUPUI, and fell in five sets to Indiana State. Following the tournament,
Logan Case and
Madison Merz both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
SETTING THE TABLE
Setter
Logan Case put together another terrific weekend for WMU, handing out 11.82 assists/set on her way to an All-Tournament nod at the Sycamore Invitational. The sophomore's weekend included a career-high 64 assists against Indiana State. Case's weekend helped her climb up to 11.00 assists/set this season, which leads the MAC and ranks 17th nationally.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Logan Case picked up her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with her 64-assist, 13-dig performance against Indiana State on Friday.
Andelyn Simkins and
Maggie King each recorded a double-double against the Sycamores as well, giving them three and two, respectively, this season.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Milwaukee (4-5) enters the weekend having gone 2-1 last weekend at the South Dakota Classic, picking up victories over Bradley and Central Arkansas, and falling to South Dakota. Leading the way for the Panthers were junior middle blocker Ari Miller and senior setter Rylie Vaughn, who each earned All-Tournament honors.
WMU owns an 8-4 record in the all-time series between the two programs, but the most recent meeting, in 2019, went to the Panthers.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The tournament host, Butler (6-4), swept Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday for its third consecutive win. In the victory, senior middle blocker Melody Davidson collected 24 kills, tying a program record for a three-set contest. Following Wednesday's performance, Davidson is third in the Big East Conference in both hitting percentage (.361) and kills/set (3.79).
The only prior meeting between Western and Butler came in 2019, with the Broncos outlasting the Bulldogs in a five-set thriller.
ON THE HORIZON
The Broncos begin Mid-American Conference play next Thursday and Friday, Sept. 23-24, with a trip to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan.
