TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan volleyball team wrapped up the Sycamore Invitational at Indiana State University on Saturday with a convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-14) sweep of IUPUI.
Abi Wilcoxson had a match high nine kills, while Meredith Phillips and Madison Merz each had six. Merz also had two blocks on the day. Sophomore setter Logan Case had 27 assists and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Merz. The Broncos held the Jaguars to a -.059 hitting percentage on the day, helping force 23 attack errors.
The Broncos built an early lead in the first set at 9-2. IUPUI was able to close the gap later on in the set after 4-0 run that put them within one, 20-19. A service error put the Broncos up 21-19 and an attack error, followed by a Block by Kennedy Hogan and Maggie King set up set point. An attack error by IUPUI's Briana Brown sealed the set for the Broncos.
The second set started off closer with an attack error by Wilcoxson shrinking Western Michigan's early lead to 6-5. The team's traded points but the Broncos gained some distance after going on an 8-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. The run featured back-to-back aces by Andelyn Simkins. WMU had runs of 3-0 and 6-0 after that before a kill by Wilcoxson put the Broncos up 2-0.
Western Michigan did much of the same in the match's final set, using an early 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. IUPUI got within two after a ball handling error on the Broncos made it 9-7, but the team responded with 9-2 run to break the set up, 18-9. After a kill by the Jaguars' Corrissa Remter made it 22-14 WMU, the Broncos scored the final three points to pick up their sixth win of the season.
Western Michigan returns to action next weekend at the Butler Bulldog Brawl, taking on Milwaukee and the host Bulldogs.
