ALLENDALE, Mich. – Western Michigan track and field senior thrower
Aniya Davis made program history on the opening day of Grand Valley State Extra Weekend Meet on Friday, setting a new program record in the discus.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., native threw a career-best distance of 180' 2" (54.91m) to win the event. She surpassed the previous record of 176' 10" set back in 2014 by Andrea Hiler. Davis reached the record-breaking mark on her fourth throw. The win was also her fourth of the outdoor season and third in the discus.
Taylor Eaton also competed in the event, taking seventh place with a distance of 134' 4". Davis and Eaton also competed in the hammer throw, with Davis taking third and Eaton taking fifth. Davis also threw a personal-best distance in the hammer, matching her discus mark at 180' 2" (54.92m), while Eaton threw 158'.
Also competing on the day was
Courtney Allen in the 800-meter run and
Ashley Shipps in the 5,000-meter run. Allen finished with a time of 2:18.80, while Shipps ran a time of 18:50.24.
The Broncos are back in action on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
