KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team scored one run in the bottom of the ninth and had the game-winning run at the plate before its comeback attempt fell short in a 3-2 loss to Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon inside Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth junior
Connor Charping led off the inning for WMU with a walk and then later moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs redshirt junior
Logan Hudson laced an RBI single to left field, scoring Charping and cutting the Falcon lead down to one.
With the tying run on first the Broncos looked to spark a comeback but an unassisted ground ball to the BGSU first baseman ended the game and the scoring threat.
After its offensive outburst Friday, the Broncos were held to just two runs on two hits on Saturday. WMU showed its patience in game three of the four-game series with BGSU, drawing five walks.
Leading the way offensively was
Logan Hudson who went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one walk. At the top of the lineup, Charping went 1-for-3 with one walk and one run scored. Fellow junior
Sean O'Keefe drove in one of the Bronco runs on a groundout in the bottom of the third. Behind the plate freshman
Greg Budig went 0-for-2 with one walk and one run scored.
The duo of RHP
Easton Sikorski and RHP
Brenden Lovell led the Bronco pitching staff, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs while striking out seven BGSU batters. Sikorski pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three. In relief Lovell went three innings allowing no runs on just two hits with four strikeouts.
BGSU was guided by RHP Gage Schenk who picked up his fourth win of the season after throwing 8.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts. The Bronco offense was unable to capitalize on Saturday going 1-for-8 with two outs and 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Western Michigan now has an overall record of 13-16 and 12-7 in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos looks to claim its third straight conference series on Sunday, April 25 with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m.
Bowling Green got on the board first in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs on three hits. The Falcons registered an RBI double off the centerfield wall with one out and then had an RBI single to right field to gain a 2-0 advantage.
The Broncos cut the Falcon lead down to one in the bottom of the third scoring one run on one hit. WMU had runners on the corners with one out prior to O'Keefe ground ball to the pitcher that allowed the runner from third to score and give WMU its first run of the ballgame.
BGSU tallied another run in the top of the fourth to earn a 3-1 lead. The Falcons looked to post a big inning in the top of the fourth loading the bases with no outs. However, a fielder's choice to throw out the runner at home followed by a Bronco 6-4-3 double play ended the BGSU scoring threat.
WMU looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth scoring one run on one hit. Charping led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk before advancing to second two batters later thanks to a sacrifice bunt from
Justin McIntyre.
Down to the final strike of the game,
