KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 8-0 in Mid-American Conference play with just one match to go after a 5-2 win at Sorensen Courts over Toledo on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos earned the doubles point after going 2-1. Freshman
Joaquin Caballer and junior
Peter Kuszynski made quick work of UT's Wojciech Szczesny and Krzysztof Wetoszka, winning 6-1 at No. 3. The Rockets battled back with a win at No. 1 after Adam Kovac and Thawin Suksathaporn defeated
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri, 6-3. The pairing of juniors
Fynn Lohse and
Jack Randall claimed the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Cole Shoults and Filip Zupancic at No. 2.
Kuszynski pushed WMU's lead to 2-0, opening singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Shoults. Opitz made it 3-0 with a win at No. 1, 6-1, 7-5 over Suksathaporn. Toledo picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 3 to cut the lead to 3-2. Szczesny defeated
Brogan Pierce 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5, while Wetoszka beat Lohse at No. 3 6-3, 7-6. Sophomore
Arjun Honnappa clinched the win for the Broncos with a victory at No. 4 over Adam Kovac. The two battled in the first set with Honnappa ultimately winning it 7-5. The second set went a bit smoother for Honnappa, winning it 6-3. Freshman
Benjamin George rounded out the match with a win at No. 6, improving to 10-0 in singles play on the season after beating 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 over Luis Kleinschnitz.
Western Michigan wraps up the regular season with a chance to secure the MAC Regular Season Championship and the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, hosting Northern Illinois on Saturday at 2 p.m. NIU has one loss in MAC play, falling to the Broncos earlier in the season.
