KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan tennis team fell in a heartbreaker to Buffalo on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club, 4-3.
The Broncos (13-3, 5-3 MAC) were down 3-1 in the match after Lindsey Ziegler defeated Gabriella Akopyan at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1 to earn the team's first point.
Kaitlyn Rogosch defeated Azra Deniz Comlek at No. 5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to bring WMU within one. Freshman
Ana Guadiana then tied it up at 3-3 with a win at No. 3 over Hsin Yuan Shih in three sets. Shih took the first set 6-4 but Guadiana came back to win the second 6-4. Guadiana was down 4-1 in the third set and battle back to tie it at 5-5 before taking the set 7-5.
The match came down to No. 4 singles with WMU's
Karin Hamilton battling Ambre Amat for three sets. The two traded sets at 6-4 before heading to the third. In a back and forth set the two battled to a 6-6 tie and headed to a tie breaker. Amat won the tie breaker 9-7 to give the match to the Bulls.
Buffalo opened the match taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, with the No. 2 match going unfinished.
Western Michigan heads on the road to take on Miami at 1 p.m. next Friday and then to Bowling Green on Sunday.
