Broncos Wrap Up Season With 2-1 Win at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team wrapped up the season with a thrilling come-from-behind win, 2-1, on the road at Toledo on Sunday.

The game was deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the final minutes of play. Junior right back Kai Sugiyama took the ball down the right flank and cut into the box at the goal line. She placed a low cross into the middle of the box and senior midfielder banged it into the net from eight yards out to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead with 1:57 left to play.

WMU killed off the remaining time to finish the season with a 6-2-2 record and a four-game winning streak. Ball State defeated Eastern Michigan to earn the Mid-American Conference West Division's berth in the MAC title game next Saturday against Bowling Green.

Western Michigan's other goal was scored by Morgan Otteson, while senior Hannah Sargent finished off her career with five saves and a perfect 6-0-0 record on the season.

"I'm really proud of the team," said head coach Sammy Boateng. "We didn't play well today and Toledo controlled much of the play. We were still able to fight back again and get the win. It was a gritty game and we found a way to be victorious. After we went down a goal no one put their heads down. They all looked at each other and knew they could do this. We created dangerous opportunities and were able to finish them."

After a scoreless first half Ashton Cassel scored to give Toledo a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute. A Rocket forward tried to cross it into the box from the right side of the field but a Bronco defender deflected the pass. Cassel won a race to the ball in the top right corner of the box and fired it into the net.

Minutes later Otteson scored her second goal of the season and second goal in as many games to tie it up at 1-1. Toledo attempted to clear the ball from its box but it got deflected to the just outside the center. Otteson beat a UT player to the ball and shot it into the far-left corner of the net.
