OXFORD, Ohio – Despite scoring nine runs and recording double-digit hits the Western Michigan baseball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end in a high scoring 16-9 loss to Miami on Sunday afternoon.
For the tenth game this season the Broncos recorded double digit hits, scoring nine runs on 14 hits. WMU had seven players record a hit on Sunday with four players earning multi-hit games while junior
Sean O'Keefe registered the lone multi-RBI game.
Leading the way offensively for the Broncos was senior
Drew Devine who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI and two runs scored. Devine also drew a walk on Sunday and for the weekend hit .400 with three runs scored.
Earning his second multi-hit game of the series was junior
Connor Charping who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Charping also drew two walks against Miami and registered a team-best .412 batting average in the four-game series with the RedHawks.
Hitting in three-hole for the Broncos junior
Justin McIntyre went 2-for-5 with one double, one RBI and one run scored. McIntyre hit .250 for the Broncos over the weekend and ranked second on the team in runs scored (3) and RBIs (3).
Rounding out the multi-hit games for the Broncs was senior
Logan Hudson who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one double and one RBI. Hudson in the four-game series hit .400 and had a .600 slugging percentage.
On the mound Sunday the Broncos used five different pitchers and registered 10 strikeouts while allowing just five walks. Sophomore LHP
Dane Armbrustmacher shined for the Broncos out of the bullpen throwing five innings, allowing just six hits while striking out a career-high seven batters.
For the weekend Western Michigan posted a .265 batting average and scored 25 runs on 36 hits to secure its first series victory over Miami since 2017. WMU had four players with over a .300 batting average in the four-game series and as a team recorded nine extra-base hits.
On the mound over the weekend WMU posted a 5.91 ERA and held Miami to a .221 batting average while striking out 37 RedHawk batters. The trio of
Will Mullen, Ryan Watt and
Brandon Petersen each posted a 0.00 ERA while sophomore RHP
Easton Sikorski led the Broncos with nine strikeouts on the weekend.
Western Michigan won three of four over Miami, claiming its first series over the RedHawks since 2017. Overall WMU has won nine of its last 11 games and back-to-back Mid-American Conference series.
After winning three of four over Miami the Broncos now have an overall record of 10-12 and 10-6 in conference play. Western Michigan returns home next weekend, April 16-18 for non-conference action against SIU-Edwardsville.
For the fifth game in a row the Broncos got on the board first scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. After back-to-back singles,
Ethan Hajdukovic roped an RBI single to left field to give WMU a 1-0 lead. On the next at-bat,
Sean O'Keefe laced an RBI single to left field as well, scoring
Justin McIntyre and giving WMU a 2-0 advantage.
The Miami offense came out firing in the next two innings scoring 12 runs on nine hits including nine in the first inning to grab a 12-2 lead.
Trailing by 10 the Broncos were on the comeback trail in the top of the third scoring five runs on five hits including three doubles. With two outs,
Jimmy Allen scored Hajdukovic on an RBI single to right field to trim the Miami lead down to nine. WMU then got back-to-back RBI doubles from
Logan Hudson and
Drew Devine to cut the Miami lead down to 12-5.
A passed ball guided Devine to score from third to cut the RedHawk lead in half in the top of the third. After a walk,
Justin McIntyre notched the third double of the inning to score
Will Morrison from third and trim the lead down to 12-7.
Miami added to its lead in the bottom of the third scoring two runs on three hits to gain a 14-7 advantage after three innings of play. The score remained at 14-7 until the top of the seventh where WMU scored one run on three hits.
With runners on first and third with one out
Connor Charping roped an RBI single to center field, scoring Hudson to cut the Miami lead down to six. It's the closest WMU got in the late innings as Miami scored one run in the seventh and one run in the eighth to extend its lead to 16-8.
The Broncos grabbed one more in the top of the ninth as Devine with one out earned his second double of the day down the left field line. Devine scored a batter later on a
Miami error to score WMU's ninth run of the game. A fly out and a fielder's choice ended the Bronco scoring chance and secure the 16-9 win for Miami.
