KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After going 2-1 last week on the road at Northern Illinois and Ohio, two Western Michigan volleyball players earned Mid-American Conference West Division weekly honors, the league office announced on Monday.
For the third consecutive week senior outside hitter
Rachel Bontrager was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week while freshman setter
Logan Case was named MAC West Setter of the Week.
Bontrager led the Broncos with 51 kills, averaging 4.25 per set while hitting a staggering .368 against Northern Illinois and Ohio. Bontrager totaled 53.0 points in the three matches and registered a double-double in each match. The senior outside hitter ranks 20th in the NCAA in total kills (262) and leads the MAC in kills and points per set.
In last Tuesday's three-set win over Northern Illinois, Bontrager paced WMU with 13 kills to go along with 13 digs and one block. On Friday night at Ohio, Bontrager recorded 17 kill and 12 digs while hitting .217 in four sets against the Bobcats. Against Ohio on Saturday the Valparaiso, Ind., native led WMU with 21 kills and 11 digs to go along with a staggering .462 hitting percentage.
Bontrager has registered five straight double-doubles and has nine on the season. Bontrager has recorded double digit kills in 15 straight matches and now ranks 10th in the conference with a .303 hitting percentage.
For the third week in a row freshman
Logan Case was named MAC West Setter of the Week after posting 158 assists, averaging 13.17 per set with two double-doubles and three 50-plus assist matches against Northern Illinois and Ohio. Case also had 36 digs, averaging 3.00 per set against the Bobcats and Huskies.
The freshman setter in a three-set win over Northern Illinois last Tuesday had 54 assists to go along seven digs and two kills. On Friday at Ohio, Case registered 50 assists while notching a career-high 16 digs and one kill. In the series finale against Ohio on Saturday, Case recorded a double-double with 54 assists and 13 digs.
Case has five double-doubles this season and has recorded over 40 assists in six straight matches with eight matches having over 50 assists. At 12.18 assists per set, Case leads the MAC and ranks 3rd in the NCAA. Her 694 total assists rank 8th in the nation.
