WMU Drops Back and Forth Battle with Cincinnati in Series Finale

CINCINNATI, Ohio – In a back and forth affair in the series finale the Western Michigan baseball team was unable to score the tying run in the late innings in a 5-4 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon inside UC Baseball Stadium.

Western Michigan and Cincinnati each had six hits on the day with the Broncos have six hits from six different players. Of the Broncos' six hits, five went for extra-bases with four doubles and one home run. Overall WMU left eight men on base to Cincinnati's six.

Leading the way at the plate for the Broncos was senior Logan Hudson going 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and one home run. Hudson connected on his second home run of the year in the top of the fourth inning and is tied for the team lead in home runs.

Hitting in the two spot in the line-up junior Justin McIntyre had an all-around day at the plate going 1-for-3 with one run scored, one double while drawing two walks. In the clean-up spot fellow junior Sean O'Keefe continued his stellar weekend with a 1-for-4 performance with one RBI.

Freshman Greg Budig was 1-for-3 at the plate as well to go along with one run scored and one double. Sophomore Jimmy Allen rounded out the line-up going 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI, his first RBI of the season.

On the mound the Broncos were led by junior RHP Jack Huisman who threw 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs on just three hits with a career-high six strikeouts. Out of the bullpen the trio of Dane Armbrustmacher, Will Mullen and Brendan Lovell combined to give up just two earned runs on three hits in 15 batters faced.

The Western Michigan offense was stellar against Cincinnati's reigning American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll pitcher Garrett Schoenle. The Broncos were able to scored three earned runs off of four hits in four innings against Schoenle.

Western Michigan wraps up road non-conference action with an overall record of 0-6 and will set its sights on Mid-American Conference action. WMU begins MAC play on the road next weekend with a four-game series at Ball State, March 19-21.

The back and forth battle between the Broncos and the Bearcats began in the top of the second as Western Michigan got on the board. After two quick outs, Logan Hudson reached on a Cincinnati fielding error. A Gavin Doyle walk gave WMU runners on first and second with two outs before Greg Budig was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

The Bearcats catcher looked to throw down to first base after a pitch was thrown but sailed the ball over the first baseman, allowing Hudson to score from second and give WMU a 1-0 lead.

Cincinnati struck right back in the bottom of the second as a single to right field with two outs tied the game at one. The Bearcat put another runner on second before a fly out to center field ended the scoring threat.

Western Michigan recorded its first hit of the game in the top of the third as Sean O'Keefe registered an RBI single to left field to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. O'Keefe brought home Justin McIntyre who reached base with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Once again Cincinnati responded with a sacrifice fly to center field scored a runner from third to tie the game at 2-2.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to respond as Logan Hudson on a 1-0 count blasted a solo home run over the left field wall for his second home run of the season and gave WMU a 3-2 lead. Two batters late, Budig laced a double down the left field line to give WMU a runner in scoring position with one out.

In the next at-bat Jimmy Allen delivered with an RBI double to left center field, scoring Budig from second to extend the Bronco lead to 4-2. In the top of the fourth Western Michigan scored two runs on three hits.

The Broncos held their lead until the bottom of the sixth as the Bearcats scored one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to gain a 5-4 advantage. Late in the game Western Michigan got runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to tie the game.

WMU had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the eighth before a strikeout and a pop fly to right field ended the scoring threat. In the ninth, Justin McIntyre recorded a two-out double up the middle to give the Broncos a runner in scoring position prior to a swinging strikeout to secure the Cincinnati win.
